Day 23

Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Matthew 6:12

Read it aloud. Then sit with it. Say nothing for five minutes.

In what measure are you asking to be forgiven?

The card is drawn on your own phone and never leaves it until you send it.

A note on one word: forgive

The Greek is aphiemi, and the nouns around it are commercial: opheilemata, debts, and opheiletais, debtors. He is not asking for a feeling. He is asking for a ledger to be cancelled. Forgive is the word English uses, and underneath it means to release what is owed. The debt image is his, not an interpretation laid over him.
